based on descriptions made by Baum (1996), Schatz (2001) and by Capuron (1974) as well as our field observations.

1- Adansonia grandidieri Baill. (Figure 11)
Vernacular name : Renala
Big sized tree, with flattened top. Greyish cylinder bole (photo 1).
Deciduous stipules. Alternate leaves, comprising 6 to 11 leaflets.
Solitary flowers, ascending, ovoid or oblong . 5 sepals fused together with valve reflowering, brown outside and off-white inside. 5 white free petals, valve preflowering.
White stamens numbering 600 to 700(photo 2). Supère pistil with 5cores with several ovules. Ovules along the axis of the ovary. No nectar producing disc.
Round brown soft fruits (photo 3).
Flowering : May - August. Ripe fruits: November- - December

2- Adansonia rubrostipa Jumm. & H. Perrier . (Figure 12)
Vernacular name: Fony
Average- sized tree, remarkable for its reddish brown bole (photo 4) with a constriction below the branches giving it a bottle-like shape .
Compound alternate leaves with 3 - 5 leaflets, deciduous stipules .
Round flower bud 24 to 29 cm long. More or less horizontal solitary flower.
5 sepals fused together, green outside and red inside with valve reflowering. . 5 white yellow free petals with valve preflowering (photo 5). 120 to 160 stamens fused together to form a tube. High pistil, 5 cores with ovules, Ovules along the axis of the ovary. Red style and stigma.
Small -sized nectar producing disc
Brown round soft indehiscent soft fruit (photo 6) ;
Flowering : November - February. Ripe fruits : May- July

3- Adansonia za Baillon. (Figure 13)
Vernacular name: Za
Big -sized tree, seldom stunted, round top, slender, cylinder, light trunk. Deciduous stipules. Alternate leaves, comprising 5 to 8 leaflets.
More or less horizontal solitary flowers, 15 to 22 cm long. 5 sepals fused together, green outside and red inside. 5 yellow free petals inserted in the base of the stamen tube. Calyx and corolla with valve reflowering. 100 to 150 stamens fused together to form a 50 to 80 mm long tube. High pistil , 5 cores with several ovules in each core, Ovules along the axis of the ovary. Red style and stigma. Distinct nectar producing disc.
Indehiscent soft fruit, dark black and oval -shaped (photo 7).
Flowering : December - February. Ripe fruits: May - July.

4- Hazomalania voyroni Capuron. (Figure 14)
Vernacular names: Hazomalany, Hazomaimbo
Average to big-sized tree with all its vegetal parts smelling camphor.
Sinuous bearing with a cylinder and straight bole with short branches having 1cm diameter sharp terminal buds.
The bark of young plants are smooth (photo 8) ;it is fissured with cracks and detaches itself easily in adult trees(photo 9).
No stipules. Simple, entire, alternate leaves with light green colour, big-sized, heart-shaped with elongated top (photo 10). Palmate leaves comprising 7 ribs: 1 midrib, 2 side veins and 4 at the base .The leafstalk is 7 to 8 cm long. Axillary inflorescence, corymbiform
Flower made up with 2 verticilles of white tepals, each verticille bears 10 to 12 tepals which are interwoven alternating with 8-12 cylinder glands. Male flower bears 4-6 stamens, female flower supported by 2 unequal bracts with 5-6 staminodes alternating with 12 glands. Low pistil, with one core, one ovule on top of the ovary . Indehiscent drupes, winged, slightly compressed at the sides.
Flowering: December to February; Ripe fruits : March - April.
